Justin Fryer (221) and Jordan Hastings (242) defeated Ron Wallenkamp (235) and Zach Woelfel (189) 463-424 to win the MAST split-squad doubles event at Middleton Sport Bowl on Saturday. Fryer & Hastings qualified sixth at 1,851, then averaged 232 through three rounds of match play en route to the win. This was Fryer’s second career MAST Title and Hastings’ first.
Fryer & Hastings earned $1,090 for the win, and also collected $265 from the Bet To Win pot. Wallenkamp & Woelfel took home $540 for second. The other match play payouts Saturday were $362 for 3rd-4th and $240 for 5th-8th. MAST also paid one additional cash spot of $138 for ninth place, going to Ken Duffield and Mike Dole, who tied with Kevin Punzel and Todd Kjell for the eighth & final qualifying spot at 1,842. Punzel & Kjell won the ninth & tenth frame roll-off between the two teams 96-86 to claim the final match-play slot.
Seventy-six bowlers competed on Sport Bowl’s house shot. T.J. Dunn (1,041) and Willie Feltz (1,009) led qualifying at 2,050, but fell to Punzel & Kjell 466-418 in the opening round of match play. Nick Wetzel was the high individual qualifier with a 1,095 set that included games of 300 and 299. Wetzel’s 300 was one of four honor counts Saturday, the others being 300 games by Quinn Sheehy, Mark Newkirk, and Scott Kramer, as well as a near-miss by Dunn with a 299.
Tour co-sponsor Bob Holzbauer and Phoenix Pro Shop donated a Storm All-Road bowling ball at cost, won by Todd Kjell. Host center Middleton Sport Bowl provided a lineage discount and added four $10 gift cards, won by Becky James, Chris Jackson, and Chris Pounders (x2). Combined proceeds resulted in $254 added to the tournament prize fund. MAST extends a huge Thank You to Phoenix Pro Shop and Middleton Sport Bowl for their generosity.
