David Beres defeated Derek Eoff 232-212 to win the MAST 2019-2020 Year-End Championship Sunday. Beres qualified seventh at 1,629, averaged over 223 while going 7-5 in match play to climb to fourth, and maintained that pace averaging over 223 in three matches in the stepladder finals en route to the win. This was Beres’ sixth career MAST title and first year-end title.
Beres earned $1,000 for the win, with Eoff taking home $800 for second. The other match-play payouts Sunday were $650 to Chris Hill for third, $530 to Chris Gibbons for fourth, $430 to Tony Oliva for fifth, $380 to Jason Becher for sixth, $340 to Corey Schmidt for seventh, $310 to Brent Ritchie for eighth, $290 to Chris Pounders for ninth, $275 to Mike Hoffman for tenth, $265 to Jay Heinzelman for eleventh, and $260 to Danny Verdecchia for twelfth. MAST also paid one additional cash spot, $100 to Rick Lewin for thirteenth.
Thirty-two bowlers competed on the Kegel Beaten Path oil pattern. The cut after eight games of qualifying was 1,547. Eoff was the runaway leader through qualifying and match play, finishing at 5,023 for twenty games to claim the top seed in the stepladder finals. The other big movers in match play were Chris Hill, who went 10-2 while averaging 236 to climb from fourth place in qualifying to grab the #2 seed in the stepladder, and Chris Gibbons, who went 8-3-1 with a 218 average to climb from fifth to the #3 seed. Eoff managed the only honor count of the event with a 300 game in his fourth match.
MAST also recognized our top ten point earners this season. Chris Pounders won the M & J Truck and Auto Points title with 1,958 points, earning $500. Tony Oliva finished second at 1,905 points earning $350. Others in the top ten were Rick Erce (1,786 points, $275), Cody Roedner (1,744 points, $235), Chris Gibbons (1,702 points, $200), Corey Schmidt (1,628 points, $170), David Beres (1,571 points, $145), Jeff Prein (1,560 points, $125), Gail Myers (1,507 points, $110), and Nick Wetzel (1,472 points, $100).
