Corey Schmidt defeated T.J. Dunn 279-184 to win the MAST event at Dream Lanes Sunday. Schmidt qualified 14th at 902, then averaged over 256 in four matches to claim his first career MAST title. Dunn led qualifying at 1037 and averaged over 237 in his match play run.
While Sunday’s match play field boasted a combined seventy career MAST titles, the four semifinalists had only one title between them entering play Sunday, that belonging to Cody Roedner with his victory at the season opener at Bowl-A-Vard. Roedner qualified fifth at 973 including one of the day’s two honor counts with 300 in his second qualifying game, and averaged 228 during match play before falling to Dunn 290-245. Jenny Wonders also had a strong run in a bid to become MAST’s third female titlist, qualifying tenth at 930 and averaging over 226 in match play before falling to Schmidt 258-214.
Schmidt earned $542 for the win, with Dunn taking home $306 for second. The other match play payouts Sunday were $196 for 3rd-4th, $148 for 5th-8th, and $114 for 9th-16th.
Fifty bowlers competed on Dream Lanes’ Majors Scratch League pattern. The cut after four games of qualifying was 894. Chris Gibbons had the day’s other honor count with 300 in his third qualifying game, and also had a near-miss with a 290 to open qualifying.
Tour co-sponsor M & J Truck and Auto Repair added $500 to the prize fund for this event. Tour co-sponsor Bob Holzbauer and Phoenix Pro Shop donated a Storm® Physix bowling ball at cost, won by Todd Kjell. Host center Dream Lanes provided a lineage discount and added five $10 gift cards, won by Kjell (x2), Roedner, Dal Geitz, and Ryan Oelke.
