Riley Smith and Ryan Zagar defeated Nate Purches and Jon Schalow 406-378 to win the MAST doubles event at Bowl-A-Vard Lanes in Madison Sunday. This marks the first career title for Smith, and the third for Zagar.
Smith and Zagar qualified third at 1,780, and advanced to the final with match wins of 459-430 over the top-seeded team of Payton Nabak and Alex Peglow and 535-423 over the fourth seeded duo of Tristian Albrecht and Calvin Akers. Purches and Schalow earned their finals berth with victories of 420-375 over the six seeds Chris Hill and Chad Maas, and 475-420 over the seven seeds Todd Kjell and Jenny Wonders.
Smith and Zagar earned $828 for the win, with Purches and Schalow taking home $550 for second. The other match play payouts Sunday were $336 for third-fourth and $242 for fifth-eighth. Smith and Zagar also claimed $180 from the Bet to Win pot.
Thirty-five doubles teams competed on the 2024 USBC Open Championships Minors pattern. The cut after eight games of qualifying was 1,622. Cody Weigel was the high individual qualifier Sunday at 973, earning him fifty bonus points in the M & J Truck and Auto Points Race. Smith posted the day’s only honor count with 300 in his third game of qualifying; Schalow had a near miss with 298 in his team’s semifinal match, leaving a pocket 7-10 split on his final shot.
Tour co-sponsor Ten Pin Alley Pro Shop donated a Storm Ion Max bowling ball at cost, won by Chris Pounders. Total proceeds resulted in $152 added to the event’s prize fund. MAST extends a huge Thank You to Ten Pin Alley Pro Shop for their generosity.
